Case study: North-East forecourt portfolio sale to Certas Energy UK (Gulf)

One example of Marla’s passion for achieving business growth while investing in her employees was extensively covered in trade media in 2021, when she sold her portfolio of fuel forecourts in north-east England – a business that was ranked in the year’s Top 50 Indies.

Acquired in 2012 from Bishop Retail, Marla oversaw the transformation of the seven sites and inspired the growth of the business, which was sold to Certas Energy UK Ltd in a much healthier and stable condition than on its acquisition. Despite the problems caused by the nationwide lockdowns during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, the portfolio attracted considerable interest from buyers, with multiple offers received for individual sites and the entire group – from which Certas was selected as the preferred bidder.

Marla’s management of her staff, who were regarded as central to the successful operation of the forecourt business, was singled out for promoting a united vision to securing the future of the business – a trait which has earned Marla considerable praise and recognition in the industry.

‘We are delighted to have concluded this acquisition of seven well-run forecourts and a highly capable and community-minded team of people. It’s a good fit for our business and adds further strength to our company-operation. We already have a strong Gulf presence in the North East and these sites will be an ideal complement to our thriving dealer operation.'
